Issue: Cannot Open Links in Gmail 

If you cannot open links in Gmail, follow the below-mentioned troubleshooting steps.

Solution 1: Setting up your browser as the default browser

  • This is a basic troubleshooting method. Setting up your browser as the default browser might fix the problem in opening links from the Gmail.
  • If you are using Internet Explorer as the browser, launch it on your computer.
  • Click the Tools menu and select Internet Options from the drop-down list.
  • Go to the Programs tab and click the Make Default button.
  • Click OK and check if issue cannot open links in Gmail is resolved.

Solution 2: Setting up the protocol handlers

  • On your Windows computer, open the Google Chrome browser and navigate to the Gmail Sign-In page.
  • Enter your login credentials in the required fields and click the Sign in button.
  • Once you have logged into your Gmail account, click the Protocol Handler icon available on the right side of the address bar.
  • In the pop-up dialog box, click the Allow radio button to give access to the email links from Gmail.
  • Click the Done button and check if you could open email links from Gmail and fix the issue cannot open links in Gmail.

Solution 3: Enabling and disabling handler switch

  • This method can be used if you aren’t able to find the Handler icon in the Gmail tab.
  • Using your Chrome browser, open the Gmail tab and type chrome://settings/handlers in the address bar.
  • Hit the Enter key and click the More icon.
  • Select the Remove option from the displayed menu.
  • Toggle on and off the ‘Allow sites to ask to become default handlers’ button.
  • Now, you could access the Handler icon from the Gmail tab.
  • Click the Handler icon and select the Allow option in the pop-up window.
  • Click Done and verify the settings by opening a test email link in your Gmail account after finishing the issue cannot open links in Gmail.
