Protonmail Two Factor Authentication Settings

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a security layer for ProtonMail email accounts. When the two-factor authentication is enabled on your ProtonMail, you will be asked to enter a 6-digit code upon logging in. besides, Protonmail two factor authentication protects your account from being hacked. To enable Two-factor authentication for your ProtonMail account, you need to install the authenticator app on your device. There are various authenticator apps used to generate the 6-digit code. For Android and iOS, you can use the Authy, Google SAuthenticator, or FreeOTP app.

Steps to set up Two-factor authentication in ProtonMail:

  • On your computer, open the default browser after ensuring that you have a standard Internet connection.
  • Visit the official ProtonMail sign-in page and enter your login credentials to log in to your Protonmail account.
  • Click the Settings icon at the top and navigate to the left-side panel to select the Security tab.
  • Under Two-Factor Authentication, click the Enable Two-Factor Authentication button.
  • Next, open the authenticator app installed on your mobile phone.
  • Choose the option to scan a QR code or manually enter the authentication key.
  • To scan the QR code, point your device’s camera at the QR code displayed in the settings section of your ProtonMail account.
  • To manually enter the authentication key, click on the Enter key manually instead of link.
  • Enter the login password of your ProtonMail account along with the two-factor passcode in the authenticator app.
  • Your ProtonMail will provide the passcodes. Note down the recovery codes and keep them safe to avoid losing your account in the future.
  • If you reset your ProtonMail account, the Two-factor authentication will be disabled automatically.
  • To enable it back, open Settings by clicking the Settings icon at the top of your mailbox.
  • Select Security from the left-side panel and click the Enable Two-Factor Authentication button.
  • You can also authenticate the Protonmail two factor authentication from multiple devices.
