How To Fix Smtp Relay Access Denied Error?

The SMTP relay access denied issue is an email error occurring when the sender fails to authenticate the outgoing mail server. The error may also occur if the recipient has marked your server as spam. When the error occurs, it doesn’t allow your email to be sent from your mail server to the recipient’s. The error occurs showing, “554 5.7.1 Relay access denied” message.Proceed with steps given below to fix the SMTP relay access denied issue.

  • Open your Outlook application from your Windows computer.
  • Navigate to Settings to check the email settings.
  • You can change your email password to prevent the SMTP relay access denied error. Make sure to choose a password that is at least 8-characters long, which includes an upper case letter, lower case letter, numbers, and symbols.
  • Check whether you have properly entered your username, email address, password, and incoming and outgoing mail server names. Then, click Next.
  • Go to the File menu and select the Account Settings option.
  • Otherwise, click the Tools menu and select Accounts.
  • Select your account in which the “Relay access denied” error occurred.
  • Click the Properties section and select the More Settings option.
  • Navigate to the Outgoing Server tab and checkmark the My outgoing server requires authentication option. Then, click the OK button.
  • Go to the Advanced tab and enter the Outgoing server port number as 465.
  • Set the Encryption type to SSL from the drop-down list.
  • Set the other required settings and click OK.

Fixing SMTP Relay access denied in Outlook:

  • Select the Test Account Settings option and click Next if the test is successful.
  • Compose an email and try sending it. 
  • If the Relay Denied access error occurs again, go to Advanced Settings.
  • Set the Outgoing server port number to 587. Then, select the Encryption type as TLS. Then, click OK.
  • If the SMTP relay access denied issue persists, run a full system scan to check for viruses or malware.
  • You can use the default Windows Defender Antivirus software or install any other trusted third-party Antivirus software.
  • Remove any viruses present on your computer.
  • Once you have tried the above procedure, check if your domain is marked as Spam.
  • Try sending an email to another recipient. If the email is sent, the problem lies with the recipient you tried sending the email earlier.
  • Check with the recipient and request him/her to remove your email from spam.
  • You won’t receive the SMTP relay access denied error when your outgoing email settings are authenticated.
