How To Fix The Issue Outlook Crashes When Opening Email?

Outlook is the most preferred email client. Sometimes, problems might arise due to various reasons and Outlook crashes when opening an email. Here are the step-by-step instructions to resolve the problem of Outlook crashes when opening email.

Step 1 - Check your antivirus program

  • Step 1:Sometimes, your antivirus program interferes with your system and as a result, Outlook crashes. In such a case, disable the antivirus program on your computer. If this doesn’t work, uninstall it.
  • Step 2:If removing the antivirus program resolves the problem, use some other antivirus program on the computer.

Step 2 - Install the latest updates

  • Step 1:The Office installation on your computer might be outdated. It is because the Windows update is not downloaded and installed automatically.
  • Step 2:First, make sure your system is updated to the most recent version.
  • Step 3:To install Office updates, launch the Outlook 2016 email client.
  • Step 4:Navigate to the File tab and click Office Account.
  • Step 5:Select the Office updates option followed by the Update now option.
  • Step 6:Mostly, the Outlook crashes when opening email problem will be resolved after installing the Office updates. If it persists, carry out the remaining steps given below.

Step 3 - Uninstall the problematic updates

  • Step 1:Hold the Win and I keys on the keyboard.
  • Step 2:When the Settings screen opens, click the Update & Security option.
  • Step 3:Navigate to the Windows Update tab in the left panel.
  • Step 4:In the main panel, click the View update history link followed by the Uninstall updates link.
  • Step 5:Locate the problematic update and double-click it.
  • Step 6:Carry out the on-screen instructions to remove the problematic update.
  • Step 7:Check if Outlook crashes when opening an email. If Outlook still crashes, continue with the following steps.

Step 4 - Disable Add-ins

  • Step 1Open Outlook 2016. Click File -> Options. Select the Add-ins option.
  • Step 2:Navigate to the Manage section and click the Go button.
  • Step 3:When the next dialog box opens, disable all add-ins and click the OK button.

Step 5 - Start Outlook 2016 in Safe Mode

  • Step 1:To open the Run dialog box, hold the Win and R keys on the keyboard.
  • Step 2:Type Outlook /safe in the Open field.
  • Step 3:Click the OK button in the Run box. Or else, press the Enter key on the keyboard.
  • Step 4:When the Choose Profiles window appears, click the OK button to start Outlook 2016 in Safe Mode.

Step 6 - Repair Office programs

  • Step 1:Close any Microsoft Office programs that are running on your computer.
  • Step 2:Launch Control Panel and click the Programs and Features option.
  • Step 3:Locate Microsoft Outlook 2016 and right-click it.
  • Step 4:Click the Repair option.
  • Step 5:This will resolve the issue where Outlook crashes when opening email.
