Before going into the troubleshooting methods, let’s see some of the causes of this problem.

  • Step 1:Poor or unstable internet connection.
  • Step 2:Work Offline is turned on.
  • Step 3:Third-party Outlook add-ins installed on your computer.
  • Step 4:Corrupted account and data files.
  • Step 5:Outdated application and OS.
  • Step 6:An issue with your computer.

To resolve the Outlook server connection issue, try the following methods one-by-one.

Method 1: Connect your computer to the internet

  • Step 1:Check whether you’ve connected your computer to the internet.
  • Step 2:If your internet connection is unstable or poor, then connect it to a stable connection and try to connect Outlook to the server.

Method 2: Disable the Work Offline option

If the Work offline option is enabled in your Outlook account, there is a chance for the server connection issue to occur. To turn off the Work offline option, follow the below instructions.

  • Step 1:Launch the Outlook application.
  • Step 2:Go to the Send/Receive tab.
  • Step 3:Locate and click on the Work Offline option.
  • Step 4:Make sure that the Work Offline option is grayed.

Now, check if the Outlook problem connecting to server problem is resolved. If not, perform the next method.

Method 3: Disable the third-party extension

If you have installed third-party extensions in the Outlook application, then disable them to resolve this issue.

  • Step 1:On the main screen of the Outlook application, click on the File menu.
  • Step 2:Choose the Options option.
  • Step 3:Click on the Add-ins option followed by the Go button.
  • Step 4:Deselect all the enabled extensions and click on the OK button.
  • Step 5:Now, restart the Outlook application.

Method 4: Repairing the Outlook account and rebuilding the Outlook data file

Repairing the Outlook account

  • Step 1:Go to the Info menu of the Outlook application.
  • Step 2:Choose your email account.
  • Step 3:Select Account and Social Network Settings > Account Settings. Highlight the email account (in which you are encountering the issue) and click the button named Repair.
  • Step 4:Follow the on-screen instructions.

Rebuilding the Outlook data file

  • Step 1:Go to the Account Settings window.
  • Step 2:Choose the Outlook account that is not connecting to the server and click the Data Files tab followed by the Open File Location option.
  • Step 3:Modify the data file name or move it to some other location.
  • Step 4:After doing so, restart the Outlook application.
