Issues: Zimbra Cannot Receive External Mail

If you have any issues in receiving external mails on your Zimbra email account, you have to trace out where the email is failing. For this, send a test message and check the log files on your MTA server.Ensure that you have checked the /var/log/zimbra.log file. Often, it is helpful to tail the log file as given below when you send the message.tail -f /var/log/zimbra.log Once done, check the response. If you see the nothing logged, no connection, or nothing message, the problem is with DNS or your firewall. To resolve the Zimbra cannot receive external mail problem due to the DNS or firewall issue, perform the following step-by-step instructions.

Zimbra Cannot Receive External Mail

Zimbra Can’t Receive External Mails Due To Firewall Issues

Step 1

Troubleshoot your firewall issue by having an account on a system outside of your network.

Step 2

  • Step 1:Servers on the internet have to be connected to your MTA.
  • Step 2:Note: The connected port must be 25.

Zimbra Can’t Receive External Mails Due To DNS Issues

Step 1

  • Step 1:The mail domain that you have created for your account should have an MX record.
  • Step 2:To test the same, type host -t mx domain.
  • Step 3:Wait until you get a response.
  • Step 4:The resultant IP address must be either public or private. If it is a public IP address, ensure that the firewall forwards port 25 to the MTA server.
  • Step 5:Check if the Zimbra cannot receive the external mail problem has been resolved. If it persists, proceed with the following steps.

Step 2

  • Step 1:If your mail is delivered to the MTA server, but not to the mailbox, you will see the postfix/1mtp … deferred … connection refused line in the /var/log/zimbra/log file.
  • Step 2:This indicates that you cannot perform the Local Mail Transfer Protocol (LMTP) delivery.
  • Step 3:You can resolve this problem by using native IP address lookups instead of DNS.
  • Step 4:You can even configure your internal network’s domain name to lookup differently internally compared to what it does externally.

Step 3

  • Step 1:Make sure the host is configured correctly in /etc/hosts.
  • Step 2:Still, if Zimbra cannot receive external mail, contact our support members by clicking the Call button on this page.
